How Ski Resort Size Is Measured

"Largest" depends on what you measure:

  • Skiable acres: the standard in North America. It counts the area of skiable terrain, but resorts define it differently; some include hike-to, cat-skiing or private terrain.
  • Kilometers of runs: the standard in Europe, measuring the length of marked pistes. Linked European ski areas look enormous by this measure.
  • Lift-served terrain: the area you can reach by lifts alone, the most useful number for most skiers.
  • Vertical drop: how far you can ski from top to bottom, another way to think about "big."

Because resorts update terrain and measure differently, published figures vary between sources. Numbers below are rounded where sources differ.

What About Powder Mountain?

Utah's Powder Mountain is often listed with more than 8,000 total acres, which would top the list. But much of that terrain is reached by cat, snowcat shuttle or hiking, or is tied to private areas, and sources disagree widely on how much is lift-served. That's why most lists name Park City as the largest lift-served resort in the US.

Deer Valley's Expansion

Deer Valley has been adding terrain and lifts in a major expansion. For the 2026/27 season it lists 4,500 skiable acres, including new Hail Peak terrain. Older articles cite larger planned totals; the 4,500 figure is the resort's current number.

Whistler Blackcomb links two big mountains with the Peak 2 Peak gondola and has more than 5,000 feet of vertical on each side.

Largest Ski Areas in the World

Europe's linked ski areas connect several villages and valleys by lift, so they're measured in kilometers of runs:

Ski AreaCountryRuns
Les 3 ValléesFranceAbout 600 km
Portes du SoleilFrance / SwitzerlandAbout 580 km
4 ValléesSwitzerlandAbout 412 km
Via Lattea (Milky Way)Italy / FranceAbout 400 km
Matterhorn (Zermatt–Cervinia)Switzerland / ItalyAbout 322 km
Tignes–Val d'IsèreFranceAbout 300 km
Ski ArlbergAustriaAbout 300 km

Run lengths are from a ski-area database that measures slope length the same way for every resort. By that measure, Park City and Big Sky each list about 250 km, among the largest outside Europe.

Les 3 Vallées describes itself as the largest ski area in the world: for 2026/27 it lists about 600 km of runs, around 10,500 hectares (roughly 25,950 acres), 169 lifts and seven resorts, including Courchevel, Méribel and Val Thorens.
