BMX Tricks for Beginners: 10 Tricks in the Right Order (2026)
Start with balance tricks, build up to hops and spins. Here are ten BMX tricks in a sensible learning order.

Before You Start
BMX tricks build on each other, so learn them in order. Start with balance tricks on flat ground, then move on to hops, then spins. You'll need a BMX bike that fits (see the BMX size chart), a helmet, gloves and knee and shin pads. Flat pedals help you learn proper technique.

1. Track Stand
Balance on the bike without moving, pedals level, front wheel turned slightly. It builds the balance you'll use in every other trick.
2. Manual
Ride slowly, shift your hips back and straighten your arms to lift the front wheel without pedaling. Balance on the rear wheel and cover the rear brake.
3. Endo
Roll slowly, squeeze the front brake and shift your weight forward so the rear wheel lifts. Let it drop back down gently. Start with small lifts.
4. Bunny Hop
Lift the front like a manual, then push the bars forward and scoop your feet up to bring the rear wheel up. It's the foundation for most tricks. Full guide: how to bunny hop.
5. Fakie
Ride up a small ramp or bank and roll back down backward. Keep your weight centered and look over your shoulder.
6. Tail Tap
Ride up a quarter pipe, turn, and tap your back wheel on the deck or coping, then roll back in forward.
7. 180
Bunny hop and turn your shoulders and hips to spin the bike 180 degrees, landing fakie. Practice on flat ground, then off small ramps.
8. Barspin
Bunny hop, throw the bars around in a full spin and catch them before landing. Practice spinning the bars while standing still first. A detangler or brakeless setup makes this easier.
9. Peg Grind
With pegs fitted, hop onto a low ledge or rail so your pegs land on the edge, slide along and hop off. Start very low.
10. Tabletop
In the air off a jump, turn the bars and lay the bike flat sideways, then bring it back straight before landing.

A BMX bike is best, since it's small, strong and built for tricks.
How long does it take to learn a barspin?
It varies; many riders practice for weeks. Get a solid bunny hop first.
What safety gear do I need?
A certified helmet, gloves and knee and shin pads. Many riders add elbow pads too.
