How to Choose

  • Axle size: many BMX rear axles are 14mm, and front axles are often 3/8-inch (about 10mm). Most pegs are 14mm inside with a 3/8-inch adaptor, so one peg fits either end.
  • Material: steel for toughness, sleeved for smooth grinds.
  • Length and diameter: longer and wider pegs are easier to lock in.
  • Quantity: one or two? Most riders start with pegs on their grind side.

Steel, Aluminum or Plastic?

TypeStrengthsTrade-Offs
Steel (chromoly)Toughest; suits street ledges and rough concreteHeaviest; can bite on metal rails
AluminumLighter than steelWears faster on concrete
Plastic sleeve over metal coreSlides smoothly on rails and coping; quiet; sleeves are replaceableSleeves wear and need replacing

How Many Pegs, and Which Side?

Many riders start with two pegs on the side they naturally grind, front and rear, and add the other side later. Some street riders run four; others run none and stick to air tricks. If you grind on your drive side, a hub guard on the rear wheel helps protect the driver and sprocket from damage.

Installing Pegs

  1. Remove the axle nut.
  2. Slide the peg over the axle (use the adaptor if needed).
  3. Reinstall and tighten the nut securely.
  4. Check the wheel is straight and tight before riding.

You'll typically need a deep socket or wrench for the axle nut. Check the nut threads fully onto the axle through the peg; some pegs need a longer axle.

Care

  • Rotate pegs occasionally so they wear evenly.
  • Replace worn plastic sleeves before the core starts grinding.
  • Recheck axle nuts regularly, since grinding can loosen them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Steel or plastic BMX pegs?

Steel pegs are durable and classic. Plastic-sleeve pegs slide more smoothly and are often quieter and kinder to ledges; sleeves can be replaced.

What size BMX pegs do I need?

Match the axle: many BMX rear axles are 14mm and many front axles are 3/8-inch. Most pegs are 14mm inside and include a 3/8-inch adaptor.

Are pegs sold individually?

Often, yes. Check whether the listing is for one peg or a pair.

Can I put pegs on any BMX?

Most freestyle BMX bikes take pegs. Race bikes usually don't use them.

Do pegs make tricks easier?

They enable grinds, stalls and peg tricks.

Do plastic pegs work on concrete ledges?

Yes, but plastic sleeves wear faster on rough concrete than on metal rails or coping. Steel pegs are tougher for street ledges.

What is a hub guard?

A guard that protects the rear hub driver and sprocket area when you grind on your drive side.
