What Is Longboard Dancing?

Longboard dancing is a flowing, creative style where you walk up and down the board, cross-step, spin and do freestyle tricks while rolling. It borrows heavily from longboard surfing, where surfers walk along the board to the nose. It's best done on smooth, flat ground at a gentle cruising speed, and it looks as good as it feels.

What Makes a Good Dancing Board?

  • Length: long decks, often around 42–48 inches or more, give room to walk.
  • Width: wider decks (around 9.5–10 inches) give a stable platform.
  • Symmetry: symmetrical shapes let you ride and step in either direction.
  • Flat or mild concave: easier to walk on.
  • Kicktails: useful for freestyle tricks and pivots.
  • Soft, smooth wheels: roll over small bumps without interrupting your footwork.

1. Shuffle

While rolling, slide your back foot up toward your front foot, then step your front foot forward. Keep your feet on the board's centerline.

2. Cross-Step

The foundation of dancing. Step your back foot over your front foot toward the nose, then bring the other foot over in front. Walk back the same way. Keep your weight centered and your steps light.

3. Peter Pan

A kicking step: as you step forward, kick one foot out in front, then the other, like a little skip. It's playful and flowing.

4. Pirouette

Spin your body 180 or 360 degrees while rolling, keeping your feet centered on the board.

5. Cross-Step Backward

The same cross-step, walking back toward the tail.

Practice Tips

  • Start on flat, smooth pavement at a slow, steady speed.
  • Practice steps on the board while it's stationary on grass first.
  • Keep your knees soft and your weight over the board's center.
  • Look ahead, not at your feet.
  • Wear a helmet, especially while learning spins.

Is It Right for You?

If you love cruising and want a creative, flowing style rather than speed or big tricks, longboard dancing is a great fit. Not sure which board? See longboard size guide, our longboard picks and longboard vs skateboard.
